The 2,700 seat Opera Bastille house was created as part of President Francois Mitterrand's ambitious project to create new monuments for Paris. The building was designed by Carlos Ott and saw its first performance in 1990. The Hotel Marais Bastille is less than ten minutes' walk from this stunning example of modern architecture.

The richly inspiring operas programme scheduled for the 2013-2014 season leans heavily on Italy, the land where the operatic form was born around 1600.
Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti runs until October 9th. This dramma tragico, composed in 1835, has a libretto based on Sir Walter Scott's The Bride Of Lammermoor. In Europe in the mid 19th century there was considerable interest in the culture and history of Scotland, where this work is set.
October 10th until November 16th will see a run of Aida, by Giuseppe Verdi, who is considered along with Wagner to be the 19th century's most influential composer of operas. Commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Isma'il Pasha, this masterpiece has been acclaimed since its 1871 opening in Cairo.
I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini is scheduled to be performed from November 25th to December 19th. Based loosely on Sir Walter Scott's Old Mortality, this opera set during the English Civil War was Queen Victoria's favourite. The Sicilian composer died at the age of 33, just nine months after the premiere of this, his final opera.
