The news of the Hotel Marais Bastille this time looks at the Paris Opera and its upcoming schedule of performances. We also let you know about some superb events that you can attend at the Carrousel du Louvre. Then, as a special treat we take you on a journey into the past as we look at the history of the thoroughfare on which we are located, the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir.
Claude Lévêque; The Greatest Show On Earth
Firstly, however, we would just like to mention that when you go to see the trade shows at the Carrousel du Louvre you must not forget to view the work of Claude Lévêque, installed under the world famous Louvre Pyramid. “Claude Lévêque; Sous le plus grand chapiteau du Monde” is an exhibition showing at the Louvre Museum until January 2nd, and as the guest artist in residence at that prestigious location he has built an astonishing incandescent light installation within Ieoh Ming Pei's celebrated Pyramid.
Claude Lévêque's work is a form of art that intervenes in the spaces it occupies, delivering a unique sensory charge. Neon is his signature medium of choice and his neon intervention in the great glass pyramid in the form of a red lightning bolt is a startling addition to an already startling structure. This is just the start, however, as the artist will be extending his intervention in 2015 into the underground moat of the medieval Louvre.
Now, having startled you with lightning, let’s take a look at our other recommendations for this month.
An exciting New Season for the Paris Opera
The programme announced by the Opéra National de Paris for the final months of this year and the beginning of next is an exciting one indeed. There is a mix of both old favourites and some productions that are seen less often. At the Hotel Marais Bastille you will be within easy reach of both the Opéra Bastille and the Opéra Garnier. On the schedule are Puccini’s dramatically powerful Tosca, and also La Boheme, the charming tale of 19th century Latin Quarter Bohemians. Additionally this season there will be presented works by Mozart, Humperdinck, Rossini, Debussy and Strauss.
Upcoming fairs and exhibitions at the Carrousel du Louvre
The subterranean Carrousel du Louvre shopping centre is also the site of an exhibition and events hall that is regularly the setting for some prestigious shows and trades fairs. November will bring three that we recommend in particular. Fotofever Paris is an informal show aimed at collectors of the photographic arts, with a host of dealers and many superb examples on show. Belles Montres is an international exhibition of the watchmaker’s art, where you can see prestigious brands and learn how these timepieces are designed and assembled. Le Grand Tasting offers the chance to sample the finest wines produced in France.
The story of the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir
The boulevard Richard-Lenoir on which the Hotel Marais Bastille is located is a lovely place; a prime example of the network of new boulevards that grew out of the reconfiguration of the centre of Paris in the mid 19th century. Beneath it runs the Canal Saint-Martin. It is lined with the characteristic and iconic Parisian Haussmann era architecture. Along its length it is bedecked with greenery, and was once a notable location for seasonal fairs. It is truly a shining example of urban splendor, with a fascinating history, and we will be delighted to tell you all about it.
